The Texas Medical Transcription Institute course will enable you to:
- Develop extensive knowledge of medical terminology
- Understand human anatomy
- Develop knowledge of clinical diagnoses and treatment of common diseases and conditions
- Learn about common lab tests, diagnostic indications, techniques, expression of values and significance of results
- Demonstrate knowledge of common drugs and their indications, actions, dosages and administration
- Become familiar with surgical diagnoses, techniques, findings and equipment
- Demonstrate knowledge of Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI), formerly AAMT, standards of style
- Understand medical ethics, including privacy and confidentiality
- Practice transcription using the industry-approved educational SUM program, complete reports and take the exam to become a Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT).

Once the classwork is complete, the six-month internship starts. The internship portion pays you to intern as a medical transcriptionist under Quality Assurance supervision.
